Seagate Rosewood Families, Headmaps and Preamps

Post by lcoughey »

Rosewood 8C (CheopsAM)- WES, WCC, W93, WCB

WES - 0,1 - 82 - SDM1
WCC - 0,1,2,3 - 82
W93 - 0,1 - 82

Rosewood A5 (CheopsLiteM) - WBZ, WDE, ZDE, WDZ, WGE, ZDZ, ZF5

WBZ - 0,1 - 82; 0,1,2 - 82 - SBK3, SBM3; 0,1,2,3
WL1 - 0,1 - C2 - SPS6, SDM2, 0,1,2,3 - SDM4

WDE - 0,1 - 82 - ACM1, RSM7, LCM2
WKP - 0,1 - C2 - SDM4
WG3 - 0,1 - 82 - SDM4
ZDE - 0,1 - 82, 0,1 - 87 - SBM3, SDM2, RSM7
ZF5 - 0,1,2 - C2, 82, 87

WC0 - 1,2,3 - 82 - SBM3
WDZ - 0,1,2,3 - C2/82 - LDM2
WQ9 - 0,1,2,3 - 82 - RTM2
ZDZ - 0,1,2,3 - 82 - SBK2

Rosewood AF (Janus) - WDZ, ZDZ, ZF4

WBZ - 0,1 - 82 - ????
ZGS - 0,1 - 82 - EB01

ZF4 - 1,2,3 - ?? - EB01

WDZ - 0,1,2,3 - ??? - EB01
ZDZ - 0,1,2,3 - 82 - EB01

Note: it was just noticed that when reading the Preamp directly from ROM on one drive (ZF5), the preamp shows as 82. Yet, via ctrl-l in terminal, it shows C2. This seems to reinforce the idea that the preamp versions are likely interchangeable.
  • This has happened 2X, thus far - Using a Rosewood AF (ZDZ) set of heads on a Rosewood A5 (WDZ) patient allowed to read, but could not write SA.
  • As noted below by @arthur, AF-WBZ donor heads worked for A5-WBZ patient, including the ability to write to SA.

I just started paying closer attention to this, so it is just the one case that I noticed. My hope is that I can try to make sense of Rosewood and come up with some consistent rules.

This is not my first time where I changed the heads and could only read, but not write the SA...just the first time that I clued in that it was from a different family of Rosewood for donor heads. Might just be coincidence or it might be something more. Time will tell.

Just completed a successful recovery. Rosewood AF-WBZ (donor) was working fine in A5-WBZ in my case. Read/write SA also OK. Preamp via ctrl-l in terminal is 82.

I want to add, this was a very new version of the EB01 fw drive. Was not possible to unlock with PC3K. But sliders still looks identical under microscope.

I just encountered another case where I used AF (ZDZ) donor for A5 (ZDZ) patient. I can read the SA, but cannot write back to it, making it impossible to fix the damaged MC.
