It has been a while since I had to think about the older Hitachi head maps and thought this information might be useful to others. In the case of this 320GB VLAT model, it has 4 heads and 2 platters.
Head map in NVRAM: 05 04 03 02 07 07
----> head 05 (0)
------Platter------
----> head 04 (1)
----> head 03 (2)
------Platter------
----> head 02 (3)
What makes it particularly confusing for these drives is that the logical head mapping doesn't start with the bottom surface. Rather, it head 0 is the top most surface, the opposite of most most drives manufactured these days.
Hope this helps.
