We have 4 "identical" Seagate DM series drives from a NAS unit that one would think are identical internally, but they are not. So, I thought I might start listing drive specs as I encounter them to help with sourcing suitable donors:

Re: ST2000DM001 Head Maps
Just goes to show why the serial is important to check. I guess in this case the "2" must highlight the extra head. Probably was supposed to be a 3Tb, but had a platter surface that didn't pass QC.
What was the head map of that one anyway?

Another easily confused head mismatch:
Serial: W1E3...
Model: ST2000DM001
P/N: 1CH164-302
FW: CC26
Date: 13371
Site: WU
Number of heads: 4
Serial: W1F2...
Model: ST2000DM001
P/N: 1CH164-302
FW: CC26
Date: 13371
Site: WU
Number of heads: 6
Serial: W1E5...
Model: ST2000DM001
P/N: 1CH164-515
FW: CC47
Date: 14036
Site: WU
Number of heads: 4
Without checking the serial numbers, one would have thought that the first two drives would be a perfect match, but that is clearly not the case, leaving the first and third drives as having the more likely set of compatible heads.

Re: ST2000DM001 Head Maps
I believe the 2nd and 3rd characters of the serial number should match, which they do for #1 and #3.
Re: ST2000DM001 Head Maps
Exactly, but not necessarily a guarantee that they will be compatible. But, at least they have the same number of heads.LarrySabo wrote:I believe the 2nd and 3rd characters of the serial number should match, which they do for #1 and #3.
Re: ST2000DM001 Head Maps
It would be good to know how the slider topology, HSA sticker and HDA sticker relate to compatibility (preamp type and version). Not that you can check/know all of these on potential donors you don't yet own.
