When doing data recovery, specialists have several options of data recovery software written specifically for professional data recovery labs. The technician or professional versions of these software applications tend to have extra features that prove to be very useful on a daily basis. One program that is growing on us is UFS Explorer Professional.
In earlier years, we used UFS Explorer because it was one the only professional data recovery software to provide decent support for various Linux file systems, such as XFS, commonly found in NAS units. But, as the years rolled on, it seemed as though UFS Explorer development stalled.
I’m pleased to say, UFS Explorer development is alive an well today. A week hardly passes without an update being posted with new features and/or fixes. One recent feature added, the focus of this blog post, is a reading cache; which, when enabled, drastically improves the performance of RAID recoveries with very small block sizes.
For example, G-RAID external storage units are known to use a block size of 1 sector. Because of this, the rotation between drives is so frequent, it causes the recovery software to come to a crawl. But, with the help of enabling the reading cache for each of the drive members from the RAID array and then building the RAID array with the cache-enabled versions of the drives, things speed up exponentially. This can be seen in the screen captures below.
With a jump from 1.6MBps to 37.4MBps, that is more than 23 times faster. If one were recovering from a very small RAID array, the speed and time for the recovery may not be of any concern. But, when we are encountering RAIDs with 4TB RAID members, this very feature turns a month into a day, which is essential when providing data recovery services to business clients who need their data recovered as soon as possible.
In summary, it is features like this that have made UFS Explorer one of our favorite recovery programs to use here at Recovery Force. But, to make it even better, we have found the communication from the developers at SysDev Laboratories to be very good. They quickly answer questions and extremely receptive to feature requests.
If you run a professional data recovery lab, we highly recommend UFS Explorer Professional for logical recoveries for individual hard drives and RAIDs.
